MAKE MONEY #26: Freecycle or Craigslist?

Good for: Crafters, Artists, Students, ALL

freecycle or craigslist

Which is Better for Making Money or Clearing Clutter – Craigslist or Freecycle?

Free is always better, right? If you haven’t ever perused the “Free” category under For Sale on Craigslist, you are really missing out. Why include the Free option (Freecycle) in a Make Money post with Craigslist? Because clearing out your house of clutter is reward in itself (think: Marie Kondo).

Well, there’s something just as good, if not better, called Freecycle

How to Use Freecycle?

From the main page, go to Browse Groups. Choose California and find the city or area nearest you  – San Francisco, SF (South), SF (North), SF (East Bay). Go to the Yahoo! Groups page and join.

What Makes Freecycle Better than Craigslist?

The best feature that Freecycle has over Craigslist’s For Sale Free category, is that Freecycle’s members let you know if an item has been PROMISED to someone. How many times have you jumped in your car to pick up a CL free item, and it’s gone when by the time you get there? Members also post when they have RECEIVED an item.

The Freecycle rules are not complicated and they are posted on each group’s site. I personally find that the slightly stricter Freecycle rules foster a better give/receive experience for everyone (not that i haven’t had wonderful CL free experiences). There are restrictions on how often you can post for a WANTED item, for example, so no one is just a bottomless “taker.”

From the Freecycle site:

“We are a grassroots & entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving and getting stuff for free in their own Towns. It’s all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Membership is free. And now you can also set up your own, smaller personal Friends Circle for gifting and lending of items with just your friends! Sign up now.

It’s a lot easier to use Freecycle, which is restricted to a specific location proper, than to use the much larger filter on Craigslist – which extends as far north as other counties (and it’s a pain to sit and click on all cities to restrict it on CL…).

What makes Craigslist better than Freecycle?

Craigslist has gone big time since its inception in 1995. As of April 2009, Craigslist had established itself in approximately 570 cities in 50 countries, with the site serving over twenty billion page views per month, putting it in 22nd place overall among web sites world wide, and eighth place overall among web sites in the United States.*

In the San Francisco Bay Area alone, Craigslist has six different areas. So if you want to get rid of that old futon, Craigslist could be a better bet. But don’t give up on Freecycle – according to its site, it has 7,016,000 members across the globe, and it’s growing.

I say: check them both out.
